Shelter Island Yacht Club at Prospect Point is the subject here, a waterfront clubhouse on the island between the North and South Forks of Long Island, New York. The record places the glass negative between 1900 and 1910, a stretch when summer resorts and private yacht clubs were multiplying along the Northeast coast as well-to-do families built seasonal lives around sailing and social calls by boat. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document scenic and commercial places for promotional sale, the picture shows how a club like this tied together its pier, its boats, and its clubhouse. The glass plate itself, 8 by 10 inches, was later given to the Library of Congress by the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
