Needle's Eye, a weathered limestone formation on Gibraltar Island, sits in the western basin of Lake Erie near the resort village of Put-in-Bay. Around 1900 to 1910, the island and its shoreline drew summer steamer excursions and vacationers, and photographers working for the Detroit Publishing Company often sought out such scenic spots for views sold as postcards and souvenir albums. The glass negative preserves the sharp, shadowed outline that waves and weather had carved into the stone. Its sharp detail offers a useful record of how the lakeshore looked before later decades changed the area.
