This monument on Put-in-Bay, on South Bass Island in Ohio's Lake Erie waters, honors the Battle of Lake Erie, fought on September 10, 1813, during the War of 1812. Oliver Hazard Perry's American squadron defeated a British fleet there, and Perry's report of the victory included the line "We have met the enemy and they are ours." The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document scenic and historic sites, made this view as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1910, when visitors were increasingly drawn to such war memorials around the lake.
