Anchored boats and a motorboat named *Fugitive II* at left make this view of Put-in-Bay, on South Bass Island in western Lake Erie, a record of a boating meet rather than a harbor scene alone. The photograph shows yachts returning to their moorings after speed trials, or "paces," during the Inter-Lake Yachting Association meet held there on July 10, 1904. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American places in this period, made the glass negative. Its scene of gasoline-powered craft and sailing yachts together captures a moment when motorboats were still new and were racing alongside traditional sail.
