The photograph shows the start of the 16-foot class race at the Inter-Lake Yachting Association regatta at Put-in-Bay, Ohio, on July 18, 1906. Put-in-Bay, on South Bass Island in western Lake Erie, was a popular summer resort for Great Lakes yachtsmen, and the association's regattas drew sailors and spectators from the surrounding lake cities. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, documented resorts, steamships, and summer recreation across the United States in the early twentieth century. The scene captures the crowded start line of small racing sailboats, a useful record of how competitive sailing was organized on the lakes before World War I.
