Shelter Island, a small island between the forks of eastern Long Island, is the setting here, and the view looks out over a row of cottages along the shore at Prospect Point. Around 1900 to 1910, many such waterfront houses served as summer homes for families from New York City and other towns, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one as postcards and travel prints. The image survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, which gives it a sharp, detailed record of the buildings and their shoreline setting.
