Asbury Park, on the Jersey Shore, is the setting for this view of wind-whipped water along the coast, captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many scenic views of American resorts and landscapes for travel promotion in the early 1900s, produced the picture, and its catalog number is printed on the plate. Asbury Park was a seaside resort founded in 1871 as a Methodist temperance community, and by the early twentieth century its beachfront drew large summer crowds. The record gives the date as about 1905, and the negative later came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
