Few Atlantic resorts were as closely identified with their boardwalk as Asbury Park, New Jersey, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative captures that waterfront in the years when the town was drawing large summer crowds. Asbury Park was founded in the 1870s as a Methodist-associated seaside community and grew into a busy hotel and amusement town along its long promenade. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view, sold photographs of American scenery and towns to travelers and publishers, so the plate was meant for wide circulation. The record dates it only tentatively to about 1905, and as a glass negative it could yield many prints.
