This glass negative records a boardwalk at Asbury Park, the Atlantic resort town on the New Jersey shore that grew rapidly after the 1870s as railroads brought vacationers from New York and Philadelphia. Boardwalks like this one were the social center of such resorts, lined with hotels, bathhouses, and amusements, and they drew crowds of strollers in their best clothes. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this view, was a commercial firm known for travel photographs of American towns and landscapes in the early twentieth century. Its catalog number is etched on the negative, which helps place the image within that company's large body of work.
