Few American campuses are as recognizable as the Rotunda at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, the domed building that anchors the grounds Thomas Jefferson designed after founding the school in 1819. This glass negative records a ceremony held there, labeled Inauguration Day, and its date of about 1905 is marked with a question mark in the record. Such occasions drew faculty, students and visitors to the grounds, and the Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of towns, landmarks and scenic places across the country, made many images like this one around the turn of the twentieth century.
