Monticello, the hilltop home Thomas Jefferson designed and spent much of his life building outside Charlottesville, is the subject here, shown from the southeast side. The photograph is a glass dry plate negative made for the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1906 sold views of American landmarks and scenery to travelers and to publishers of postcards and booklets. Jefferson, who died in 1826, remodeled the house over four decades, and by the early twentieth century it had become a shrine that drew visitors eager to see the architecture of the third president. The negative's survival in a collection donated in 1949 preserves a record of how the estate looked before later restorations.
