A horse-drawn vegetable cart, likely in Richmond, Virginia, stands out on this glass negative for an unusual reason: the exposure appears to be doubled, so buildings seem to overlap the trees behind them. The negative is also broken and taped to a second sheet of glass, a sign of how fragile these plates were after decades in storage. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs and color prints of American towns and scenery in the years around 1900 to 1910, produced many street scenes like this one. Peddlers with wagons of produce were a common sight in Southern cities then, and the image offers a glimpse of how food reached households before supermarkets.
