Set along the Lawn at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, the West Range is one of the long rows of student rooms that Thomas Jefferson designed as part of his plan for the school, which opened in 1825. The ranges face one another across a grassy quadrangle, with faculty pavilions at their ends, reflecting Jefferson's idea of an academical village where students lived close to their teachers. This glass negative dates from about 1900 to 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing American towns, campuses and landscapes for postcards and printed views. Its 8 by 10 inch format gives a detailed record of the grounds in the early twentieth century.
