Pavilion IX, one of the ten pavilions Thomas Jefferson designed along the Lawn at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, is the subject of this glass-plate negative made between 1900 and 1910. Jefferson laid out the Academical Village in the 1820s, arranging the student rooms and faculty housing in colonnaded rows that face a long green lawn closed at one end by the Rotunda. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of American places, sold such scenes to travelers and tourists, so the picture doubles as a record of how the campus looked to visitors at the turn of the century.
