The Rotunda at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville was designed by Thomas Jefferson, who founded the school in 1819 and drew its plans himself. This view, taken from the east approach around 1905, shows the domed building as the central focus of the Academical Village, the arrangement of pavilions and student rooms set along the Lawn. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American landscapes and cities for color and print sales in the early 1900s. The plate reflects the era's interest in showing campus architecture as a symbol of learning and civic pride.
