Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's hilltop home near Charlottesville, is the subject here, shown from the north side rather than the more familiar southeast view on the nickel. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1906, when the firm was producing large numbers of views for travel books, postcards and railroad promotion. Jefferson designed the house himself and worked on it for decades, so the building was already a national shrine by the time this image was taken. The negative's catalog number and its later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 show how many of these views passed through collections across the country.
