The title identifies this glass negative as the steamship *North West*, the "S.S." prefix marking a steam-powered vessel of the kind that carried passengers and freight on American rivers and lakes in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, photographed and sold views of towns, landscapes, and transportation across the country around this time, and its tourist-oriented catalog made many of its images widely known. This 8 x 10 inch plate was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and eventually entered the Library of Congress, so it now serves as a record of the company's work and of the steamboat trade during the decade it was made.
