Grand Avenue, running north from Twelfth Street, was one of the main commercial corridors of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, and this glass-plate view captures its storefronts and street life in the years between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of photographs of American cities, scenery and businesses in that period, made the image using a large 8 by 10 inch negative, a format that yielded sharp detail for enlargements and reproductions. Commercial streets like this one were the center of daily life for shoppers, workers and streetcar riders, so the picture is useful for seeing how an early twentieth-century city looked at street level.
