Fourth Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, is the subject here, a street lined with residences and crossed by streetcar tracks, which places it in the period when electric streetcars were reshaping American city life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced many such views of American towns and cities, often sold as photochrome prints. The negative is a large 8 x 10 inch glass plate, a format favored for its sharp detail, and its surviving record shows it came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. The date of about 1906 is an estimate.
