Sumner Avenue in Springfield, Massachusetts, is the subject here, shot looking east down a residential street in the years between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued a huge catalog of views of American towns, cities and landscapes at the turn of the twentieth century, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative. Its survival and its donation to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 mark the route by which many of these plates reached public collections, and the street view itself records the ordinary streetscape of a New England city during the early automobile era.
