The record names House of Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts, a city then known for its manufacturing and its federal armory. This large 8 x 10 inch glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was sending photographers across the United States to document towns, buildings and streetscapes. Glass plates like this one recorded fine architectural detail, so the hospital's façade and surroundings were captured with a clarity that smaller film could not match. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
