The east portal of the Hoosac Tunnel, shown here near the village of Florida in northwestern Massachusetts, marks one of the most ambitious and troubled engineering projects of the nineteenth century. The tunnel, bored through the Hoosac Range, opened to rail traffic in 1875 after decades of delays, cost overruns and deadly work conditions, and it was long known as a costly feat of construction. This glass-plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American rail lines and scenery in the years around 1900 to 1910.
