Washtenaw Avenue was one of the main thoroughfares in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a college town built around the University of Michigan, and this glass plate records how the street looked in the years before the First World War. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch dry plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that traveled widely to document American towns, scenic spots and city streets for sale as souvenirs and publications. Such views are valuable today because they capture the horse-era streetscape, with its storefronts, unpaved or early-paved roadways and the mix of pedestrians and vehicles that defined small American cities at the time.
