Third Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, appears here as a quiet residential street lined with dwellings, a view of the city's homes rather than its commerce. The glass negative is dated to about 1906 and was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sent photographers across the country to document towns, rail routes and landscapes for postcards and published views. Its 8 by 10 inch plates captured sharp detail, which makes street scenes like this one useful records of domestic architecture at the turn of the century. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
