Few pictures in this collection show the inside of a store's washroom, which makes this view of the third floor of the E.M. Bigsby Co. showrooms in Detroit unusual. The image dates from roughly 1900 to 1915, a period when department and clothing stores were promoting their interiors as places of comfort and refinement, and a well-kept restroom was one way to signal that. The Detroit Publishing Company made large glass-plate negatives like this one to document the city's commercial life, and the record notes that the negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
