Taken from a balcony above the floor, this view looks down on the show rooms of the E.M. Bigsby Co., a Detroit clothing firm, with the private office set apart from the sales area. The Detroit Publishing Company, which worked in the city from the 1890s into the 1920s, made commercial and scenic views, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from between 1900 and 1915. Interiors like this show how mercantile floors were arranged before self-service retailing, with goods displayed for customers and staff handling each sale.
