This view shows the main reception room on the ground floor of the E.M. Bigsby Co., a Detroit clothing store, with its display space laid out for customers. It is an 8-by-10-inch glass dry plate negative, made sometime between 1900 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities, businesses, and scenery in that era. Interior views like this one record how a turn-of-the-century retail showroom was arranged and presented to the public. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
