A reception room at the Hiram Walker & Sons distillery in Walkerville, Ontario, is the subject of this view, which places the visitor's welcome space at the center of a company that became one of the largest distillers in North America. Hiram Walker founded the works across the river from Detroit in the 1850s, and by the late 1890s the firm was promoting itself with commercial views like this one. The Detroit Publishing Company made the 8 by 10 inch dry plate negative, a process that let photographers capture the interiors of businesses in fine detail. The picture is worth a look for its record of how an industrial firm presented itself to callers and buyers.
