Here the subject is not a view of the distillery's exterior but the interior machinery of the engine room at Hiram Walker & Sons in Walkerville, Ontario, a town that grew up around the company's distilling works on the Detroit River opposite Detroit. The glass dry plate negative dates from roughly 1895 to 1899, a period when the firm was expanding its plant and steam power ran much of its operations. Photographers working for the Detroit Publishing Company often recorded industrial sites like this one for commercial sale, so the image captures a working room of boilers and engines that would otherwise be little documented. The catalog notes indicate a later gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
