From a country club balcony in Knoxville, Tennessee, this view looks out over the Tennessee River, and the record suggests the site may have been the Cherokee Country Club. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 to 1915 to record towns, resorts and scenic spots for sale as prints. Knoxville's river setting made high vantage points like this one worth showing, and the marks written on the plate suggest it was prepared for printing.
