The Allenhurst Club sat in Allenhurst, a summer community on the New Jersey shore in Monmouth County, where wealthy families built seasonal houses and social clubs in the decades around 1900. This view is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large catalog of American travel and scenic photographs, and it was likely made between 1900 and 1910 as a record of the clubhouse's architecture. Such clubhouses were central to resort life, hosting dances, dinners, and sporting events for members during the summer season. The negative's survival in a Colorado historical society's holdings, given as a gift in 1949, shows how these commercial views traveled far from their origins.
