Manhanset House, a resort hotel on Shelter Island at the eastern end of Long Island, appears in this view made around 1905. Shelter Island drew summer visitors from New York City in that period, who came by steamboat and ferry for weeks of sea air, boating and leisure. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large plates recorded resorts and waterfronts across the country. The catalog title spells the name "Manhansett," though the hotel's name is usually given as Manhanset.
