Whitehead is a rocky headland on Cushing Island in Casco Bay, just off Portland, Maine, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records its eroded cliffs and rock formations. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, made large numbers of views like this around the turn of the twentieth century, often for travel books and postcards that promoted summer resorts and scenic destinations. Cushing Island was a popular seaside retreat in that period, drawing vacationers by steamer from Portland. The negative's catalog number and the 1904 date, which the record gives with a question mark, suggest it was made during the height of that trade.
