Otter Cliffs, a stretch of granite bluffs on the eastern shore of Mount Desert Island, is the subject here, and the photographer caught the surf breaking against its base. By the 1890s the island had become a fashionable summer retreat for wealthy families from Boston and New York, and the rocky coast drew visitors who came to see the sea from the cliff tops. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American scenery for travel promotion in the years before 1910. Its prints were widely sold as souvenirs and magazine illustrations, so the picture reflects how Americans of that era wanted to see their coastline.
