Recorded around 1903 on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, the steam yacht *Surf* was photographed by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose negative still carries its own numbering. Steam yachts of this period were privately owned pleasure boats, and wealthy owners used them for cruising lakes, rivers and coastal waters. The firm, later known as the Detroit Publishing Company, was known for large-format views and for photochrom prints sold to travelers and collectors. The catalog number on the negative shows how the company organized and reprinted its images over the following decades.
