This 1901-era view shows the racing yacht *Independence*, a large sailing vessel of the kind that drew crowds to the America's Cup contests off Newport, Rhode Island, though the record only notes the races as a possibility. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many commercial views of American resorts, harbors, and events around the turn of the twentieth century, produced this image on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative. Its path to the Library of Congress began with a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, and the same series also survives as a glass transparency.
