Set in Augusta, Georgia, this obelisk is catalogued alongside the city's hotels and its Civil War history, a pairing that suggests memorial and commerce shared the same downtown streets. Obelisks like this were a common way for Southern communities to mark the war and its dead in the decades after 1865. The glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many city and landscape views for travelers in the early 1900s, so the picture also shows how Augusta presented itself to visitors. Note the tall stone shaft against the surrounding buildings.
