The chimney in this view belongs to the Confederate Powder Works in Augusta, Georgia, a facility built during the Civil War to produce gunpowder for the Southern army. Augusta's location on the Savannah River and its rail connections made it a sensible site for the works, which operated near the river's falls and drew on the city's water power. By the time this glass negative was made, between 1900 and 1910, the mill had long been out of wartime service, and the tall brick stack stood as a reminder of the industry that once rose there. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photographs of American places, recorded the scene as part of its wide survey of the country.
