Some of the shops at the Great Lakes Engineering Works in Ecorse, Michigan, form the subject of this glass negative, which shows a working shipbuilding complex on the Detroit River south of the city. The company built steel-hulled freighters and other vessels for Great Lakes commerce, and its Ecorse plant was part of the region's busy maritime industry in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, recorded industrial sites and waterfront life across the country, so the picture preserves a view of the buildings that supported shipbuilding in that era.
