Three glass negatives, joined into one wide view, show the Great Lakes Engineering Works at Ecorse, Michigan, a shipbuilding yard on the Detroit River just south of Detroit, with snow covering the grounds. The yard built steel vessels for Great Lakes shipping, and the panoramic format conveys the sheer length of its waterfront and the industrial facilities that lined it. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view, was known for its photographs of American towns, landscapes and industry around the turn of the twentieth century. The record dates the image only tentatively, to about 1906.
