This view of the Great Lakes Engineering Works at Ecorse, Michigan, shows the steamer *James Laughlin* at the left edge of the frame, with the yard's hulls and fittings behind it. The yard sat on the Detroit River just south of Detroit, where it built and repaired the iron and steel lake freighters that carried ore and coal across the Great Lakes in the early 1900s. The picture is one of three glass negatives the Detroit Publishing Company made of the site in 1906, and its record gives a useful snapshot of working shipbuilding during that era.
