Two vessels sit at the left edge of this view: the tug S.J. Christian and the steamer Charles B. Hill, both of Ecorse, Michigan, a small river town on the Detroit River south of Detroit. The shipyard behind them, the Great Lakes Engineering Works, built steel steamers and tugs for the lake trade in the early 1900s, when iron ore, coal, and grain moved in ever larger hulls across the Great Lakes. The picture belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's photographs of the region, made on glass negatives for commercial sale. Its three negatives were joined into one wide scene, and the record notes that they were scanned out of order, so the left-to-right sequence is worth checking against the notes.
