Tugboat S.J. Christian and the steamer Charles B. Hill of Ecorse sit at the left edge of this view of the Great Lakes Engineering Works, a shipyard on the Detroit River in Ecorse, Michigan. The yard built and repaired vessels for the lake trade, and its docks and hulls reflect the heavy industry that lined the river in the early 1900s. The picture survives as one of three glass negatives, a format the Detroit Publishing Company used for its views of American towns and waterfronts. Its date is given as about 1906, which places it during a busy period for Great Lakes shipping.
