Ecorse, a river town on the Detroit River south of Detroit, is the setting for this view of the Great Lakes Engineering Works, a shipyard that built steel vessels for the lake trade. The record lists it as one of three glass negatives, so the yard was photographed from several positions, a common way to document industrial sites. Shipbuilding on the Great Lakes expanded in the early 1900s as steel hulls replaced wooden ones, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded the region's industry and scenery, captured that change along the waterfront.
