This panoramic view shows the Great Lakes Engineering Works shipyard at Ecorse, Michigan, on the Detroit River, where the firm built steel vessels for the Great Lakes trade. The scene is recorded on three glass plates joined into one wide frame, and the hoisting machinery visible in the yard points to the heavy lifting that steel hull construction required. The record gives the date as about 1906. Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, industries and waterways around the turn of the century, made images like this one for commercial sale and record.
