This picture records an artist's rendering of the Michigan Malleable Iron Works rather than the factory itself, so it shows how the company wanted its plant to look on paper. Malleable iron was cast iron heat-treated to make it less brittle, which made it useful for railroad car couplers, hardware, and automobile parts in the early 1900s. Detroit was growing fast as an industrial center during these years, and works like this one were often promoted through polished drawings like this, which could show a planned or idealized layout. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose images captured the city and its industries around 1900 to 1910.
