Marchers from the Lansing and Ann Arbor commanderies of the Michigan Knights Templar make their way down a Detroit street in this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, taken during a state encampment. The Knights Templar is a Masonic-affiliated order, and its state encampments drew members from across the state, often ending in public parades that brought crowds into city streets. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and events in the decade around 1900 and left a broad visual record of urban life in that period.
