A dense column of uniformed Knights Templar fills the street in this view of a Michigan state encampment of the Masonic order, photographed in Detroit. Fraternal parades like this drew large crowds in the early 1900s, and members marched in ceremonial regalia, including plumed hats and swords, that set them apart from ordinary civic processions. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that produced a large body of city and event views for travelers and publishers into the 1920s. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail in the ranks and the buildings along the street.
