At the turn of the twentieth century, this view of the gymnasium at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti shows a campus built to train teachers, a mission the school had carried since it was founded in 1849. The picture was made as a glass negative, probably by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of towns, schools and landmarks as postcards and prints. The college later became Eastern Michigan University, so the picture also records a building and a period of physical education that have since changed.
