Few things in the Detroit Publishing Company's early 1900s work capture civic pageantry as directly as this view of the head of a Knights Templar parade at a state encampment in Michigan. Fraternal orders like the Knights Templar, a Masonic body, staged elaborate public processions during their annual gatherings, and the marchers here lead a column down a city street that was lined with spectators. The image comes from a glass dry-plate negative, the format the company used to produce its large-scale photographic views of the period, and its catalog number ties it to that commercial series. The Detroit Publishing Company was known for documenting American towns and events in this era, so the picture offers a useful look at how public ceremony filled city streets before the automobile dominated them.
